Main St Parent Newsletter 12/1/25

Hello Main Street Families,

I hope that you were able to enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family, and welcome to December!  We have three weeks of school and then we will close for Winter Break.

Prior to the break, we held our school spelling bee and I’m pleased to announce that Thao Murray and JD Pendleton will be representing Main Street School at the Santa Cruz County Spelling Bee, which will be held on January 24th, 2026, on the UC Santa Cruz campus.

The annual Scholastic Book Fair is THIS WEEK, and FOMS would love your help to make it the most magical experience for our students! From December 1st  through 5th, the Main Street Library will be transformed into a book-lover’s haven where students can explore stories from all genres - adventure, mystery, fantasy, graphic novels, and more.

To keep things running smoothly, we’re looking for parent volunteers to help in 45-minute shifts, before and after school, throughout the week. Duties include welcoming students, helping them find books, tidying displays, etc.

If you can join us for a shift (or more!), we’d be so grateful. Your time directly supports our school community and helps foster a love of reading for all our kids. Please sign up to volunteer here.

On Tuesday, December 2nd, there will be a Family Night at the book fair,  from 5:30-7:00 PM.  This will be a great opportunity to purchase books that you might need for the upcoming gifting season, and also a chance to hear some read aloud from me (Principal Broadhurst).  Are you interested in joining me and reading out loud at the Family Night?  If you are, send me an email at cbroadhurst@suesd.org it would be great to get some family members to participate, and it’s very rewarding to read a book out loud to our students.

Main Street School is participating in the Annual Second Harvest Food Drive, and if you’d like to donate non perishable food items, please bring them to school, we do have a barrel inside the office.

The school office has let me know that if families have elastic waist pants or shorts that their child has grown out of or no longer wears, they would appreciate them being donated to the office, to use when kids need to change for various reasons.

Punctuality is an important life skill and being on time to school means that your child does not miss any learning.   If your student often comes to school late or tardy, I’ll be reaching out to you to see how we can help get your child in class on time.   Coming to school late (less than 30 mins late) or tardy (more than 30 minutes late) is disruptive to their learning and being on time will ensure they do not miss any learning.

Thank you for sending your students to us on a daily basis, the more your child is in school, the more they will learn!  If your child needs to be absent you can access the short term independent study option here.  Students who complete the short term independent study receive attendance credit.

Hola familias de Main Street,

Espero que hayan disfrutado de un maravilloso Día de Acción de Gracias en familia. ¡Bienvenidos a diciembre! Tenemos tres semanas de clases y luego cerraremos por las vacaciones de invierno.

Antes de las vacaciones, realizamos nuestro concurso de ortografía escolar y me complace anunciar que Thao Murray y JD Pendleton representarán a Main Street School en el concurso de ortografía del condado de Santa Cruz, que se llevará a cabo el 24 de enero de 2026 en el campus de UC Santa Cruz.

La Feria Anual del Libro Scholastic es ESTA SEMANA¡Y a FOMS le encantaría contar con tu ayuda para que sea la experiencia más mágica para nuestros estudiantes! Del 1 al 5 de diciembre la biblioteca de Main Street se transformará en un paraíso para los amantes de los libros, donde los estudiantes podrán explorar historias de todos los géneros: aventuras, misterio, fantasía, novelas gráficas y más.

Para que todo funcione a la perfección, buscamos padres voluntarios que ayuden en turnos de 45 minutos, antes y después de clases, durante la semana. Las tareas incluyen dar la bienvenida a los estudiantes, ayudarlos a encontrar libros, ordenar los expositores, etc.

Si puedes acompañarnos en un turno (¡o más!), te lo agradeceríamos mucho. Tu tiempo apoya directamente a nuestra comunidad escolar y fomenta el amor por la lectura en todos nuestros niños. Por favor regístrate para ser voluntario aquí.

El martes 2 de diciembre, habrá una Noche Familiar en la feria del libro, de 17:30 a 19:00 h. Será una gran oportunidad para comprar libros que podrían necesitar para la próxima temporada de regalos y también para escuchar una lectura en voz alta de mi directora Broadhurst. ¿Les interesa acompañarme y leer en voz alta?en la Familia¿Noche? Si es así, envíame un correo electrónico a croadhurst@suesd.org Sería fantástico que algunos miembros de la familia participaran, y es muy gratificante leer un libro en voz alta a nuestros estudiantes.

La escuela Main Street está participando en la campaña anual de recolección de alimentos Second Harvest y, si desea donar alimentos no perecederos, tráigase a la escuela, tenemos un barril dentro de la oficina.

La oficina de la escuela me ha hecho saber que si las familias tienen pantalones o pantalones cortos con cintura elástica que sus hijos ya no usan o ya no usan, agradecerán que los donaran a la oficina para usarlos cuando los niños necesitan cambiarse por diversas razones.

La puntualidad es una habilidad importante para la vida, y llegar a tiempo a la escuela significa que su hijo/a no se perderá nada de la enseñanza. Si su hijo/a suele llegar tarde o con impuntualidad, me pondré en contacto con usted para ver cómo podemos ayudarle a llegar a clase puntualmente. Llegar tarde (menos de 30 minutos) o con impuntualidad (más de 30 minutos) interrumpe su aprendizaje, y ser puntual le garantizará que no se pierda nada.

Gracias por enviarnos a sus alumnos a diario. Cuanto más tiempo esté su hijo en la escuela, más aprenderá. Si su hijo necesita ausentarse, puede acceder a la opción de estudio independiente a corto plazo aquí. Los estudiantes que completan el estudio independiente a corto plazo reciben crédito de asistencia.
